Streaming Sports Network Canada Username Password Login Games Leagues Teams Venues Hockey Football Basketball Soccer Volleyball Blogs Bowers breakawayFriday afternoon thoughts September 11 2009As I sit here in the studio on this Friday afternoon I started thinking about what Neate Sager said during his Extra Point this week on CIS Touchdown and Im not sure that I agree with him To quote my colleague he said that there might be a method to their madness when referring to Canada Wests overtime rules in football In case you missed it Ill sum it up this way Last Friday night Calgary and Saskatchewan played to a 2020 tie after regulation time and the Huskies outscored the Dinos 1413 in pair of extra periods So to most people the final score would be 3433 right Wrong In Canada West they have decided that the score and stats do not count in overtime similar to the shootout in hockey so the final score is 2020 with Saskatchewan winning the shootout 1413 The Huskies get two points and the Dinos zero (thank heaven!) and they go on their merry way preparing for the next game Granted we call the overtime that is now used in Canadian football a shootout but in all other jurisdictions (as far as my research tells me) stats in the football shootout are always kept and included in the team and individuals totals for the game and season Neate told us that the rationale behind the stats not being kept is that it could pad the offensive stats that could influence allstar and allCanadian selection at the end of the season Now having worked in the OUA and having been responsible for the postseason awards voting in 2003 and 2004 I know the politicking that goes on when trying to determine postseason awards and that statistics play a role in deciding who gets what However I cant see how a pair of touchdown passes for a QB a knockdown on a failed twopoint convert attempt would influence that outcome In fact if we continue the logic that is used by CW in this matter it would go without saying that cornerback Jonathan Krahenbils knockdown that won the game for the Huskies shouldnt be mentioned when Canada West coaches vote on their post season awards Because the play didnt happen At least statistically it didnt Until next time JB3 1 CommentsBengt Sep 11 436 pmI agree Name Email address URL Comment If you enter anything in this field your comment will be treated as spam Video Clips%videobox% Photos%photobox% Home Advertise Contact Copyright 2008 All rights reserved...
