It wasnt until later in my career as an Assistant SID at Windsor that I realized that the rivalry wasnt relegated solely to football but had permeated the very soul of the University which made me delve a bit deeper Perhaps it was the fact that the University of Windsor has intertwined origins with the University of Western Ontario (Assumption College the parent school of what would become the University of Windsor was affiliated with the University of Western Ontario from 1919 until 1953) Finally in 2003 I attended my first Vanier Cup game featuring Laval and St Marys at the SkyDome It was there that I learned that it wasnt just Windsor that hated Western nor was it even just the OUA No it had spread from far and wide from UBC to StFX It was there that I saw my first At least Western isnt here! sign held proudly by a heavily inebriated Huskies fan Which all leads me to the question at hand why the hatred for the Mustangs To sum it all up in three words New York Yankees I know it seems like Ive just run off track but stick with me Why does everyone (aside from Yankee fan) hate the Yankees Because theyve got boatloads of cash they use it well and they either win or are in contention to win every single year The same can be said of the Western Mustangs they are the Yankees of the CIS Due to the schools tremendous history their ability to draw funds from welloff alumni is unparalleled throughout the country They spend the money they have to hire the best faculty and the best coaches and no one can deny the coaching ability of Larry Haylor or Greg Marshall The other reason everyone hates Western is the arrog...
