Streaming Sports Network Canada Username Password Login Games Leagues Teams Venues Hockey Football Basketball Soccer Volleyball Blogs Not your average JoeUNB paints the town Red March 29 2009It was a close game in Thunder Bay Ontario but the much favoured UNB Varsity Reds came up big to win yet another national championship The final score was 42 with UNB looking more and more like the next CIS mens hockey dynasty The hattrick hero Lachlin MacIntosh was named MVP The first period was pure domination by the Reds with the Mustangs failing to register a single shot on goal That was definitely in coach Gardiner MacDougalls gameplan as he told a Sportsnet analyst he wanted his team to keep pressuring the puck at all costs In fact the first period was so onesided it didnt even look like a championship game more like a David and Goliath scenario with Goliath doling out the punishment The second period was a much different story however with the Mustangs bouncing back after Ouelette scored with 857 left in the period That was a turning point in the game and the Mustangs confidence was beginning to grow at an alarming rate So alarming that UNB president John McLaughlin told Sportsnet that he was very very nervous He was proud of his teams performance but he couldnt deny the fact that Western was back in the game The third period was very even with both teams registering a ton of shots and both goalies playing solid But the game became a classic when Mustangs centre Kevin Baker scored the tying goal leveling the teams at two apiece Cinderella wasnt ready to leave the ball The Mustangs continued playing a strong physical game outmuscling the Reds with firm checks and great penalty killing But unfortunately for the Stangs it wasnt mean to be MacIntosh put home his second goal to put the Reds ahead by one He would later add an emptynet goal to complete the hattrick and skate away as the games MVP Other key players to credit are John Dixon the energetic hardnosed grinder and goaltender Travis Fullerton who made a plethora of gamesaving saves at the end of the third period A game that started out looking like a UNB blowout turned out to be a heavyweight bout Good for the Mustangs who despite not being the most talented team in the CIS put all their hearts into this final game mirroring that of the Edmonton Oilers Stanley Cup run in 200506 But I guess heart can only get you so far Look for Western to come back next season a much different looking team The young players will be more experienced and more confident after this years tournament I wouldnt be surprised to see the Mustangs as heavy contenders come next years championship UNB on the other hand stayed focus all game and stuck to coach MacDougalls plan of highenergy highpressure hockey This is a team that has developed winning strategy an unmatched system ...
