Streaming Sports Network Canada Username Password Login Games Leagues Teams Venues Hockey Football Basketball Soccer Volleyball Blogs Bowers breakawayWhat the fuddle duddle October 02 2009What is the nature of your thoughts gentlemen when you say fuddle duddle or something like that The Rt Hon Pierre Trudeau February 1971 Okay now that I have your attention let me welcome you to this weeks blog posting on CIS football and not parliamentary decorum And as you all know by now or at least if you checked out CIS Touchdown youll have heard that the University of Guelph has suspended their star quarterback Justin Dunk for onegame for his use of profanity during last Saturdays University Rush telecast on the Score Generally Im pretty liberal with my thoughts about where society is heading but there are some things that I dont want to see or hear in the media Overt sexual lyrics in music is one degrading comments is another And of course cursing I might come from another generation of media (heck Im only 35 so its not like Im THAT old) but I believe wholeheartedly that the media reflects the culture of the population that it serves I also believe in free speech To a limit Ive outlined that overt or gratuitous sexual references and defamatory or degrading comments have no place in my opinion on the public airwaves Swearing is another and media type should never cuss on air Period Point finale as we say in French That said I am of another mind when a guest interviewee or athlete during a news interview or live event Because in the heat of the moment say things that they might otherwise not And lets face it its not every day that a camera is pointed in their face Which brings me to Justin Dunk I feel sorry for him because what he said was uttered around the campus of the U of G a lot last week Does it make it right No I dont believe in saying things like that about an opponent but then again I go to watch a game and cheer on my team not to heckle However I will admit that I have uttered the statement that got Dunk into hot waterAlbeit in the stands after another UWO win over my Lancers (ie game winning FG attempt that hits the upright for a loss) and not in front of a national television audience I think that this situation has been blown a little out of proportion by a small group of people probably alumni of Guelph who called to complain to the athletic department only hours after the incident occured A lot of times people who support Canadian university sport have this romantic image that our teams reflect the quality wholesome pursuit of excellence that will form the next generation of great leaders I remember a time that the Kill McGill weekend was coming up in Ottawa and a member of the general community complained about a poster they saw in one of our facilities It meant nothing!
