Streaming Sports Network Canada Username Password Login Games Leagues Teams Venues Hockey Football Basketball Soccer Volleyball Blogs Bowers breakawayRace to the postseason in the CIS October 15 2009Well here we are two (or three depending on the conference) until the playoffs and there are some amazing races shaping up in the CIS Lets take a look at a couple that are most intriguing OUA Where isnt there a race At the top theres the battle between Queens and Western for topspot but with a Queens win this weekend they not only wrap up first place but they could also relegate Western to an opening round playoff game Thats because McMaster plays at Windsor this week and a win by the Marauders coupled with a UWO loss puts Mac into second place and maybe for good That said the Marauders are facing as Lancer coach Mike Morencie described a desperate team who has a pulse for the playoffs but no longer has any room for error Windsor needs to win this weekend to stay alive in the postseason race and after coming back in the second half of last weeks game at Laurier the Blue and Gold might be able to give Mac a run for their money So what about Ottawa Well they dont play McMaster so if both teams win out Mac finishes ahead of the Garnet and Grey on tie breaker But that doesnt mean that Ottawa cant get a bye in the first round they would need some help but by taking care of both York and Windsor (both games on SSNCanadaca) the GeeGees have a shot at the bye and I guess thats all you can ask at this point in the season Laurier is the unknown quantity After a loss to Ottawa a couple of weeks ago they responded by beating up the Lancers last week and I think they could be a real sleeper team heading into the playoffs Its a team that I wouldnt want to face in the opening round Guelph slipped up last week in Ottawa and it showed some concerns on their defence As Denis Piche told me prior to the game Guelph attempts to force opponents to outscore them and thats what Ottawa did last week with a balanced air and ground game en route to racking up 729 yards in offence If Im a Gryphons fan Im a little concerned that the bend dont break defence is starting to show signs of fatigue Canada West Calgary has already locked up one of the fourth berths to the postseason dance and Saskatchewan can do the same on Saturday with a win over Manitoba which would mean that the two schools would be neck and neck for first place at identical 51 records But whats interesting are the next four teams all separated by two points that could determine the third and fourth seeds Regina is at 32 in third place but Manitoba Alberta and Simon Fraser are two point back and any one of those four teams could still make the playoffs The playoff picture could become a lot clearer this weekend with Manitoba hosting Saskatchewan Simon Fraser playing at home to UBC...
