API Hockey Pros OHL Best Of Both Worlds CHL Network CHL on Rogers Sportsnet ADT Canada Russia Challenge Home Hardware Top Prospects MasterCard Memorial Cup Teams Barrie Colts Belleville Bulls Brampton Battalion Erie Otters Guelph Storm Kingston Frontenacs Kitchener Rangers London Knights Mississauga IceDogs Oshawa Generals Ottawa 67s Owen Sound Attack Peterborough Petes Plymouth Whalers Saginaw Spirit Sarnia Sting Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds Sudbury Wolves St Michaels Majors Windsor Spitfires Development Environment Education Home The OHL Environment Dan Snyder Memorial Award Minor night raises funds spirits The Mississauga St Mikes Majors meet with minor hockey leagues around the GTA and sell tickets at a reduced rate The (Kevin LightCBC Sports) The Mississauga St Mikes Majors took to the ice against the Oshawa Generals on Nov 21 in front of 3342 screaming fans Some fans were wearing jerseys but not all of them were in Majors blue It was minor hockey night and 650 Applewood Minor Hockey Association players were in the stands wearing their own jerseys from all different minor league teams We try to promote it as a spirit night says league secretary Wendy Webster But we do it as a league fundraiser The Majors meet with minor hockey leagues around the GTA and sell tickets at a reduced rate The teams then sell the tickets at face value to raise funds The more tickets they sell the more money they make says Duncan Stauth St Mikes Majors executive vicepresident The league makes $2 on every ticket sold so the fundraiser usually earns the league around $2000 It offsets some of our costs of running the league so it might be used for subsidized goaltending clinics power skating says Webster It might offset some of the registration costs We try not to raise our registration fees But Stauth says the ticket sale fundraiser also creates a strong connection between the minor players and the OHL Focus on mentorship It is part of a larger focus on mentorship We do have a mentoring program which is targeted at the lower age groups which generally have the newer coaches Coaches and players visit these teams and help them run practices The entire program provides the younger players with mentors The minor players get to see these 16 and 17yearolds how well they play and how hard they practice It makes a better connection in the community The corporate group sales manager from the Majors attends league board meetings and together they pick a date for an association night In addition to the ticket sales Webster says the Majors have a program where they provide us with 5050 tickets to sell and usually some autographed sticks and a jersey and use of the ice afterwards So we can put that forward to our teams as incentive to sell more tickets It is a fundraising idea that exists in other areas of the country as well ...
