API Hockey Pros Notre Dame tabs Kelly as next head coach LOGINREGISTERHELPYOU ARE NOT LOGGED IN NHLNBAMLBCFLNFLCurlingTennisGolfSoccerNASCARFormula OneIndyCar NASCAR Canadian Tire SeriesNationwideCamping WorldAuto RacingWorld JuniorsSpengler CupMenS WHCWomenS WHCHockey CanadaAHLBoxingCanada GamesCHLCISECHLFigure SkatingLacrosseMMANCAASkiingSummer SportsWinter SportsMoreOlympicsFantasyDaily LineShowsTSN TalentCommunityMaineotText SizeSouth Bend IN (Sports Network) Brian Kelly has officially been named the next head football coach of the Notre Dame Fighting IrishNotre Dame confirmed the reported signing with a press release late Thursday night that indicated Kelly inked a fiveyear contract and will be formally introduced at a press conference on Friday at 130 pm (et) I am very pleased that a thorough and extensive search has led us to a new head coach in Brian Kelly who I am confident will help us accomplish our goal of competing for national championships said Notre Dame athletics director Jack Swarbrick The 48yearold Kelly had a sterling 346 record in three seasons with Cincinnati He will take over immediately for Charlie Weis who was let go following a 66 season in 2009 and a 3527 record in five seasons with the Irish Kelly led Cincinnati to backtoback Big East titles including a 120 record and a berth in the Sugar Bowl this season though he will not coach the team in that game The Everett Massachusetts native brings with him a winning pedigree having coached with Grand Valley State and Central Michigan prior to his stint with Cincinnati Kelly has an overall record of 171572 in 19 years of coaching including backtoback national championships with the Division II Lakers in 2002 and 2003 He went 1916 in three years with the Chippewas including a MidAmerican Conference title in 2006 Notre Dame has been one of the most successful programs in college football history but not recently having not added to its 11 consensus national titles since 1988 The Irish have posted just two 10win seasons since Lou Holtzs departure following the 1996 season and have won more than seven games only twice in the last seven years Hopes were high for the 2009 season as the Irish got out to a 62 start but the team dropped its last four games to Navy Pittsburgh UConn and Stanford The string of losses prompted the team to fire Weis and decline a bowl invitation Notre Dame which has an alltime record of 83729142 a 733 winning percentage has struggled to find a successful coach since Holtz left Bob Davie posted just a 3525 record in five campaigns and Tyrone Willingham went 2115 in three years before Weis replaced him The school has also gone without a major bowl win since a Cotton Bowl Classic victory to end the 1993 campaign since that victory the Irish are 19 in bowl games with the lone win coming last season in the Hawaii Bowl Since Weis was fired quarterback Ji...
