Mike Green NHL Biography Green Life 52LINKS On October 12 1985 Michael David Green was born into a humble Calgarian family Mikes father Big Dave worked for the city of Calgary while his mother Kate worked odd jobs At times Kate worked three different jobs in order to provide for Mike his older brother Matt and younger sister Megan Until the age of 10 Mike enjoyed playing soccer baseball and skateboarding during the summer months In the winter most of his friends were busy playing hockey while Mike sat bored at home After begging and debating with his parents Mike finally convinced them to allow him to play hockeyMike will never forget strapping on his used pair of TACKS hockey skates with gold blades and it didnt take long for him to get the hang of things By 14 he was one of the best in his age group and scouts were quick to notice his talents In 1999 mike was drafted to the Saskatoon Blades of the Western Hockey League where he played five full seasons After a 14goal 39point season in 20032004 he was drafted first round and 29th overall by the Washington capitals in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft a step that would forever change his lifeIn the 20072008 season Mike emerged as an elite NHL defenseman He gained the nickname Mike Game over Green because of his exciting game winning goals in the final minutes of the third period or overtime He finished the season with a leagueleading 18 goals among defensemen and 56 points With Mikes help the capitals made the playoffs for the first time since 2003 His signature faux hawk helped him become one of the clubs most popular players and started a fan frenzy called Rawk the hawk Even babies were spotted around the DC area sporting mohawks and supporting the CapsMike continued to reveal his goalscoring ability in the 20082009 season by lighting the lamp 31 times breaking the NHL record for most consecutive games with a goal by a defenseman and breaking a Washington Capitals record for the most powerplay goals in a single season by a defenseman These accolades paid off and helped Mike become a Norris Trophy nomineeWhen Mike isnt scoring goals and defending his team you can find him getting involved in community organizations and events around Washington Mike is involved with a nonprofit organization working to treat underprivileged kids and military personnel to a Washington Capitals game These deserving fans can be found in a section called Greens Gang at all home games Mike has also partnered with Elliot Seagal from Elliot in the morning radio show in a charity called So Kids Can This charity ensures that every point Mike gets is followed by a donation to Pediatric Prosthetics Inc which helps infants and children receive the prosthetic care they need The funds raised by So Kids Can and Pediatric Prosthetics Inc were distributed to children in need in the Washington DC metropolitan area In the inaugural season Mik...
