API Hockey Pros Shoot for the Cure back for third year Athletics Main Site University of Prince Edward Island UPEI Home Future Students Current Students Alumni & Friends Parents & Family Staff & Faculty Contacts SuckerfishHome Campus Recreation & Club Sports Athletics Facilities Schedule & Scores Athlete of the Week Contact Us Partnerships Box Office Recruitment Panther Sport TeamsMens Soccer Womens Soccer Womens Rugby Field Hockey Mens Basketball Womens Basketball Mens Hockey Womens Hockey Swimming Shoot for the Cure back for third yearUPEI Womens BasketballHeadlines Roster Coaching Staff Schedule & Scores Standings & Stats History & Awards Sponsors & Links Basketball Blog OTTAWA (CIS) The CIS Womens Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) proudly announced Friday its fundraising initiative to raise money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and other related cancer charities is up and running for a third straight season The Shoot for the Cure campaign has proven an overwhelming success in its first two years as the WBCA presented a cheque for $81512 to the Breast Cancer Foundation at last Marchs CIS championship in Regina a year after collecting $50320 in its inaugural season In 200809 an additional $11000 was amassed by schools that elected to donate their fundraised money to local cancer organizations Once again this year CIS womens basketball programs will raise money through regular season games exhibition matches tournaments or special events Memorial University of Newfoundland kicked off the 200910 activities with the SeaHawks Think Pink Weekend held Oct 911 while Royal Military College played an exhibition game against St Lawrence College on Oct 14 The initiative resumes this weekend during the University of Manitobas Bisons Invitational Tournament and with York hosting Wilfrid Laurier in exhibition action at Bill Crothers High School on Friday night The WBCA raised over $92500 last year Our goal this year is to exceed $100000 said UNB head coach and Shoot for the Cure project manager Jeff Speedy Each CIS womens basketball program will hold its own fundraising event and the WBCA will also raise some additional funds at the CIS championship at McMaster University in Hamilton next March Were very proud of our efforts over the past two years but we want to do even more and really hope to go over $100000 this year We lost one of our own this year in former Laurentian star Carolyn (Swords) Sturgess This has really hit home for many of us and will certainly serve as extra motivation to reach our goal The fundraising initiative was the brainchild of Rod Gilpin the longtime bench boss of the Bishops womens program now in his second season as head coach of the Gaiters mens team The 200910 Shoot for the Cure schedule is currently comprised of over 30 events with more da...
