Prince Edward Island Commission on the Land and Local GovernanceSkip to Main Content Home FranaisContact Us govpeca Biographies Commission Hearings Submissions Terms of Reference Media & Communications Links Contact Welcome to the official website of the Commission on the Land and Local Governance The Commission has received a broad mandate as indicated in the Terms of Reference and Objectives of the Commission set out in the Government of Prince Edward Islands White Paper on Land and Local Governance of November 27 2008The Commission welcomes the input of all Islanders and nonIslanders interested in the Provinces futureWhile the issues surrounding land use and those involved in local governance may appear somewhat distinct in fact there is a considerable overlapPrevious Commissions have dealt with land issues and to a lesser extent municipal or local governance issuesTo view the recommendations of previous commissions and the extent to which those recommendations which are relevant to this Commissions mandate have been implemented go toNew Overview Review and Analysis of Relevant ReportsNew 1973 Royal Commission on Land Use and Land OwnershipNew 1990 Royal Commission on the LandNew 1997 Roundtable on Resource Land Use and StewardshipThis Commission has been asked to review the status of previous Commissions recommendations and to advise on what further implementation of those recommendations might now be madeThe Commission has also been asked to go far deeper into the area of ProvincialMunicipal relations than prior Commissions have gone The interests of all citizens whether they live within municipalities or in rural areas must be carefully balanced The areas in which municipalities should have the authority to be selfgoverning autonomous bodies must also be consideredSome of the many issues on which the Commission would welcome submissions either in writing or at public hearings are as follows1 In relation to the recommendations of prior Commissions a) Have the recommendations which were implemented effectively dealt with the problems at which they were directed b) What action if any should now be taken in relation to those recommendations which remain unimplemented or only partially implemented2 Aside from the Municipalities Act and the Planning Act how effective is provincial legislation such as the Lands Protection Act Farm Practices Act Forest Management Act Environmental Protection Act Agricultural Crop Rotation Act Recreation Development Act Heritage Places Protection Act and the Natural Areas Protection Act3 What steps if any are required in order to better protect a) Our water resources b) Our agricultural lands c) Our undeveloped areas d) Our forests e) Our coastline f) Our heritage sites g) Our view...
